Cerita terjadi di Desa Gantung, Kabupaten Gantung, Belitong Timur. Dimulai ketika sekolah Muhammadiyah terancam akan dibubarkan oleh Depdikbud Sumsel jikalau tidak mencapai siswa baru sejumlah 10 anak. Ketika itu baru 9 anak yang menghadiri upacara pembukaan, akan tetapi tepat ketika Pak Harfan, sang kepala sekolah, hendak berpidato menutup sekolah, Harun dan ibunya datang untuk mendaftarkan diri di sekolah kecil itu.

Mulai dari sanalah dimulai cerita mereka. Mulai dari penempatan tempat duduk, pertemuan mereka dengan Pak Harfan, perkenalan mereka yang luar biasa di mana A Kiong yang malah cengar-cengir ketika ditanyakan namanya oleh guru mereka, Bu Mus. Kejadian bodoh yang dilakukan oleh Borek, pemilihan ketua kelas yang diprotes keras oleh Kucai, kejadian ditemukannya bakat luar biasa Mahar, pengalaman cinta pertama Ikal, sampai pertaruhan nyawa Lintang yang mengayuh sepeda 80 km pulang pergi dari rumahnya ke sekolah!

Mereka, Laskar Pelangi - nama yang diberikan Bu Muslimah akan kesenangan mereka terhadap pelangi - pun sempat mengharumkan nama sekolah dengan berbagai cara. Misalnya pembalasan dendam Mahar yang selalu dipojokkan kawan-kawannya karena kesenangannya pada okultisme yang membuahkan kemenangan manis pada karnaval 17 Agustus, dan kejeniusan luar biasa Lintang yang menantang dan mengalahkan Drs. Zulfikar, guru sekolah kaya PN yang berijazah dan terkenal, dan memenangkan lomba cerdas cermat. Laskar Pelangi mengarungi hari-hari menyenangkan, tertawa dan menangis bersama. Kisah sepuluh kawanan ini berakhir dengan kematian ayah Lintang yang memaksa Einstein cilik itu putus sekolah dengan sangat mengharukan, dan dilanjutkan dengan kejadian 12 tahun kemudian di mana Ikal yang berjuang di luar pulau Belitong kembali ke kampungnya. Kisah indah ini diringkas dengan kocak dan mengharukan oleh Andrea Hirata, kita bahkan bisa merasakan semangat masa kecil anggota sepuluh Laskar Pelangi ini!

EU promotes sustainable products and technologies: a package of actions for sustainable consumption, production and industry

Improving the environmental performance and in particular the energy efficiency of products and stimulating their market uptake are the core objectives of a package put forward by the European Commission today. It sets out a series of voluntary and obligatory actions to support a coherent and dynamic policy in the EU and internationally, helping to define eco-friendly products, informing the consumer through improved labeling and supporting their purchase through public procurement and fiscal incentives.

Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen, responsible for enterprise and industry policy, said: “The EU has to set an example and prove that industry is capable to contribute vigorously to fight against climate change. Taking up this challenge will create a win-win situation – more growth, more jobs, more environmental protection.”

Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said: “In terms of our impact on the planet we are living far beyond our means. Our actions as consumers and producers worldwide are major forces behind climate change and the destruction of nature. The time has come for us to change the type of products we buy and transform our methods of production. This is why the European Commission is putting forward proposals to encourage a switch to energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly products and production.”

Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, responsible for energy policies said: “The package puts forward a comprehensive set of measures which will contribute to the EU objectives on saving energy benefiting both the environment and the EU consumer.”

The action plan lists the initiatives the Commission will undertake in 3 areas:

1. A new product policy
Energy and resource-efficient consumer products
In the absence of voluntary action, the Ecodesign Directive presently provides a framework for setting compulsory minimum requirements and voluntary benchmarks for energy-using products. All energy-related products – that do not consume energy during use but have an indirect impact on energy consumption – will also be covered in future. This will allow addressing products such as water-using devices and windows. For example, water-saving taps and shower heads reduce water consumption and therefore also the amount of energy used for hot water without altering the user’s perceived well-being.

Mandatory labeling
Mandatory labelling will indicate relevant environmental parameters for a wider range of products, including energy-using and energy-related products.
Incentives and public procurement
The Commission also proposes that only products attaining a certain level of energy or environmental performance – identified by one of the labelling classes – are eligible for incentives and public procurement at national and EU levels. It will be up to Member States whether and in which form to provide incentives. Today incentives are granted for very different levels of environmental performance across the EU, sometimes in regions very near to each other thus limiting economies of scale for better performing products (see Memo 1). In addition Member States are recommended to adopt common green procurement practices for goods and services not (yet) covered by the above plan (see Memo 2).

Voluntary eco labelling
The EU Ecolabel scheme, which indicates the most environmentally friendly products on the EU market, will be extended to cover a wider range of products and services, such as food and drink products, and made less costly and bureaucratic. These changes will make the scheme more attractive to manufacturers and encourage them to innovate and offer more such products.

Retailers’ responsibility
A Retail Forum will be created, which will also include other stakeholders such as producers and consumers’ organisations. This forum will prepare actions to improve large retailers’ environmental performance, promote the purchase of greener products and better inform consumers.
2. Promoting leaner production
With a view to promoting leaner production, the proposals foresee:

• Developing targets and tools to monitor, benchmark and promote resource efficiency and eco-innovation. An Environmental Technology Verification scheme will be established, to support eco-innovation through increased confidence in new technologies.
• Revising EMAS, the EU’s voluntary eco-management and audit scheme, to increase its uptake, notably among SMEs, by making participation less costly and involving organisations outside the EU.
• Developing an industrial policy for eco-industries by first analysing the barriers to their expansion and to their full uptake by other sectors.
• Promoting environmental performance in small enterprises (SMEs) through customized advice.

3. Sustainable consumption and production internationally
In order to promote sustainable products worldwide, the proposals envisage:

• Supporting agreements of industry sectors as part of international climate negotiations
• Promoting and sharing good practice internationally
• Promoting international trade in environmentally friendly goods and services

Examples of gains in efficiency and cost reduction

30% of the energy used in buildings could be saved with positive economic effects in 2030. Better window insulation would contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by more than one fifth, while reducing costs to households. Significant gains are also estimated for water related devices such as baths, showers and taps.

The move came after Toyota (NYSE: TM - news - people) completed preliminary hearings with the Fair Trade Commission and an agreement was reached on April 10.

On July 14, Fuji Heavy will sell its shares to 510 yen each, or a 10 percent premium over the average closing price between December 11 and March 10.

The operation Toyota will increase the voting rights in Fuji Heavy to 16.16 percent from 9.50 percent at present.

Toyota, which has been competing in close collaboration with General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM - news - people) for the title of the world’s largest manufacturer, bought its current participation in Fuji Heavy to GM in 2005.

However, since capital formation and business alliances, the two companies have thus far been slow progress in achieving synergies.

Fuji Heavy currently makes Toyota Camry models at its U.S. plant, and also sells Justy compact cars in Europe under an original equipment manufacturers (OEM) contract with Daihatsu Motor Co., another unit of Toyota makes mini cars.

Under the expanded alliance, Toyota and Fuji Heavy jointly develop and market compact sports cars using property Fuji Boxer, or horizontally opposed engine, which is similar to Porsche AG (other OTC: PSEPF.PK - news - people) ‘ s engine.

The two companies aim to release the new interface engine rear drive sports car in late 2011 and make them into a new assembly line to be built at Fuji Ota plant in Gunma prefecture.

Toyota will also supply its compact cars to Fuji under an OEM contract before the end of 2010.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve was scrambling to prevent a “contagion” from infecting the nation’s financial system when it took unprecedented actions to back a Bear Stearns rescue package and provide emergency loans to big Wall Street firms.

The Federal Reserve released documents Friday providing insights into its private deliberations in March that led to those controversial decisions. The Fed’s actions came at a time when credit and financial problems were intensifying, threatening to paralyze the entire financial system and plunge the economy into a recession.

Given the fragile conditions of the financial markets at that time, the Fed said it felt compelled to intervene because an “immediate failure” of Bear Stearns would bring about an “expected contagion.”

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues initially moved on March 14 to provide temporary emergency financing to investment bank Bear Stearns Cos. through an arrangement with JP Morgan Chase & Co. Two days later as the investment bank teetered on the brink of bankruptcy, the Fed agreed to provide backing for up to $30 billion of a deal where JP Morgan would take over the troubled company.

That same day — March 16_ the Fed said it would allow big Wall Street firms to go directly to the Fed for emergency loans, a privilege only commercial banks had enjoyed. It was the broadest use of the Fed’s lending powers since the 1930s.

The Fed’s decision to take this action was “based on recent, rapidly changing developments,” the documents said. “These developments demonstrated that there had been impairment of a broad range of financial markets” that Wall Street firms rely on for financing.

There was fear that other Wall Street firms could become in jeopardy, sending problems cascading through the financial system.

Democrats in Congress and other critics contend the Fed’s actions are akin to a government bailout and are putting billions of taxpayer dollars at risk.

However, Bernanke has defended the actions and in appearances on Capitol Hill has said he doesn′t believe taxpayers will suffer any losses.

The Fed’s financial lifeline in JP Morgan’s takeover of Bear Stearns was subsequently changed to $29 billion and — most recently — to $28.82 billion.

The documents said that the Fed, in discussions on March 16, believed that the takeover — and its involvement in helping to bring it about — was “necessary to avoid serious disruptions to financial markets.” The Fed said that “many potential investors” had been invited to back Bear Stearns but the investment firm determined that JP Morgan was “the most suitable bidder.”

Bear Stearns began to unravel last year when two hedge funds it managed collapsed because of heavy bets on subprime mortgage securities, which soured when the housing market fell into a deep slump. Along with other big investment banks, it was forced to take multibillion-dollar write-downs on the bad investments. Then rumors in mid-March about the company’s cash position triggered a run on the investment bank that left it close to bankruptcy.

Earlier this month, JPMorgan closed its acquisition of Bear Stearns, bringing to an end an 85-year old institution.

INTRODUCTION

Life cycle collection management is a way of taking a long-term approach to the
responsible stewardship of the collections of the British Library and is one of the
library’s strategic strands. It defines the different stages in a collection item’s existence
over time, ranging from selection and acquisitions processing, through to conservation,
storage and retrieval. Life cycle collection management seeks to identify the costs of
each stage in order to show the economic interdependencies between the phases over
time. It thereby aims to demonstrate the long-term consequences of what the library
takes into its collections, by making explicit the financial and other implications of
decisions made at the beginning of the life cycle for the next 100 plus years.

Eventually it aims to combine the life cycle of both paper and digital collections, in order
to reflect the totality of the British Library’s hybrid collections.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A woman who spent nearly 60 years of her life in an iron lung after being diagnosed with polio as a child died Wednesday after a power failure shut down the machine that kept her breathing, her family said.

Dianne Odell, 61, had been confined to the 7-foot-long machine since she was stricken by polio at 3 years old.

Family members were unable to get an emergency generator working for the iron lung after a power failure knocked out electricity to the Odell family’s residence near Jackson, about 80 miles northeast of Memphis, brother-in-law Will Beyer said.

“We did everything we could do but we couldn’t keep her breathing,” said Beyer, who was called to the home shortly after the power failed. “Dianne had gotten a lot weaker over the past several months and she just didn’t have the strength to keep going.”

Capt. Jerry Elston of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department said emergency crews were called to the scene, but could do little to help.

Odell was afflicted with “bulbo-spinal″ polio three years before a polio vaccine was discovered and largely stopped the spread of the crippling childhood disease.

She spent her life in the iron lung, cared for by her parents and other family members. Though confined inside the 750-pound apparatus, Odell managed to get a high school diploma, take college courses and write a children’s book.

The iron lung that she used was a cylindrical chamber with a seal at the neck. She lay on her back in the device with only her head exposed, and made eye contact with visitors using an angled mirror above her head. The lung worked by producing positive and negative pressure on the lungs that caused them to expand and contract so that she could breathe.

Iron lungs were first used to sustain life in 1928, and were largely replaced by positive-pressure airway ventilators in the late 1950s. A spinal deformity from the polio made it impossible for Odell to wear a more modern, portable breathing apparatus, so she continued to use the older machine.

It is not known how many polio survivors still use iron lungs, but Odell was believed to have used it for longer than most.

Odell was determined to live a full life — she earned a diploma from Jackson High School as a home-bound student and an honorary degree from Freed-Hardeman College. A voice-activated computer allowed her to write a children’s book, “Less Light,” about Blinky, a tiny star who dreams of becoming a wishing star.

In a 2001 interview with The Associated Press, she said she wanted to show children, especially those with physical disabilities, that they should never give up.

“It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you see someone do the same thing,” she said.
